PAID-WA GRADUATES 40TH BATCH

The Pan African Institute for Development, West Africa (PAID-WA) recently sent out its 40th batch of students on the Diploma in Development studies (DDS) programme, Specialised Development Studies (SDS), and the Diploma in various professional courses from the Institute of Commercial Management (ICM) England, with which PAID-WA is a partner.

The ceremony was presided over by the Governor of the South West Region H.E Louis Eyaya Zanga. In his speech, he opined that poor asset distribution, civil strife, disease, capital flight and brain drain are some of the causes of the continent’s relative failure to catch up with the pace of development. In order to forge ahead, he advised and encouraged hard work through training to ward off the phenomenon of donor fatigue. He lamented the downtrend of the economies of the industrialized countries and challenged the graduants to immediately get to work in order to realize the African dream of getting out of the marginalization and acquiring total freedom.

Speaking earlier in her welcome speech, the Director of PAID-WA Mrs. Rosetta B. Thompson stated that the development of human resources through consistent and continuous investment in education and all round empowerment remains the most significant approach to tackle the numerous problems in Africa. In her words, it is in keeping with this reality that PAID-WA has, for the past 40years focused its attention on providing programmes with practical relevance to everyday realities in our countries. She also highlighted the fact that despite other professional courses introduced, the 9 months DDS course still retains its attraction, and is recording increases in its requests for participation.

Finally, she congratulated the graduating students and urged them to be proactive and innovative in activities that will change the face of Africa and bring meaningful development to its domain.

THE GRADUATES

There was a total number of 168 participants representing four countries viz The Gambia, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone and Cameroon. 23 of the participants went through the DDS programme while the three SDS courses had 34 graduating students. There were 108 students on the ICM, 41 specialised in Human Resource Development, 65 in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations, and 4 in Customer Service.

“THE POST” NEWSPAPER’S EXECUTIVE EDITOR EMERGES BEST IN SDS/HRMD COURSE

“The Post” Executive Editor, Francis Wache, one of the participants in SDS, came out best student in his class, while, Commissioner Nchanji Amos closely followed.  The Post staff was present at the ceremonial ground to cheer and offer a bouquet of flowers to their Executive Editor.

Speaking to the press at the end of the occasion, the Director of PAID-WA, Rosetta B. Thompson, said getting students to the institution “depends on the attractiveness of the programmes.  ICM programmes, for example are professional courses which attracts much attention from the industries especially in the areas of Public Relations, Marketing and Advertising”.  She noted that students found pleasure in doing courses that can easily be translated into jobs.

She went further to say, “The Development courses have been running for the past 40 years and it has never lost its usefulness given that people want to be involved in development activities either at the formal level or at the NGO level”.

Asked on the position of PAID-WA’s sponsors, she said “they are part of our history and are keeping in touch with the progress of the institute. New connections are being made as well.”

REACTIONS OF SOME GRADUATING PARTICIPANTS

“Studies here in PAID-WA have been so wonderful as we usually look at the course content.  What we don’t actually have in our country is the realities of doing the Development Studies which involves a lot of field studies to gain practical experience in living with people. As far as challenges are concerned, I could say there are challenges but they are things that we can go with.  When you look at the atmospheric condition, it is ok but the academic challenges are enormous because this is a crash course which can be done for two years but we are compelled to do it for nine months.”

Kajali Sonko, Participant from The Gambia

“I find the training very interesting because at the beginning, I was unable to assess certain development issues but right now, I am able to help Africa as a whole because we know the problems that we encounter here in Africa as far as Development is concerned and I believe that with my skills, I can now help my country towards its development goals.  One of the challenges I faced was to live in a rural community out of my country, with people I don’t know.”

Pablo Ruben Mohonga Mabebe, Participant from Equatorial Guinea

“I thank God for today.  I read Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations.  I prayed to God and studied very well to achieve this.”

Bechem Ayuk Ekiko, Cameroonian Participant

RISK MANAGEMENT 21ST TO 25TH SEPTEMBER, 2009

A one week training workshop was organised from 21st – 25th September 2009, on Industrial Safety and Risk Management.  The training drew participants from some organisations in Cameroon such as CICAM and YARA – based in Douala, Cameroon.

Ø      Become conscious of their roles and actions in dealing with safety and risks situations in their respective organizations;

Ø      Be in a position to safeguard the interest of their organisations in terms of meeting up with safety and risk bearing operations.

The seven participants that took part in the training expressed their satisfaction with the professional knowledge acquired during the one week training, and promised to utilise such in their various organisations.

The Chief Security Officer in charge of the CEMAC Region of CICAM – Douala, in his remark, considered it a privilege to participate in such training, given that, a lot of new professional knowledge was acquired for the first time although he has worked in his position for quite some time.
